Can a non technical founder build a SaaS? Yes, and there are six routes.
Yes. A non technical founder can build a SaaS with AI tools, no-code platforms, a freelancer, an agency, a technical co-founder or a fractional CTO. The right route depends on your budget, how much you’ll learn, and how risky a mistake would be. Most should test demand cheaply first. We’re an agency, so weigh our view accordingly.

Your options
| Route | Cost | Suits you if |
|---|---|---|
| AI app builder | A monthly subscription | You’re testing an idea and the risk is low |
| No-code platform | Your time plus monthly fees | You like building and your features are standard |
| Freelancer | About $5,000–$11,500 (our rough estimate) | You can write a scope, and manage the work |
| Agency | About $10,000–$20,000 (our rough estimate). We’re $4,997 for a fixed scope | You want one team to deliver the whole thing |
| Technical co-founder | Equity | Software is your long-term advantage |
| Fractional CTO | A part-time fee, added to the build | You want someone on your side to check the work |
What we’d do as a non technical founder
Start by talking to potential customers. It costs nothing and takes no code. Next, build a rough version with an AI app builder or a no-code tool, and try to get someone to pay.
If people pay, your next step depends on the risk. If you’re holding sensitive data or money, get a developer involved, even if only for a review. Lovable’s own docs recommend a professional review for apps with sensitive data. For a bigger bet, compare a technical co-founder and an agency.
Whichever route you take, keep these
- Accounts in your nameDomain, hosting, code repository, Stripe and any AI provider.
- Code ownership in writingSee who owns the source code.
- Your customer conversationsThis is the part only you can do, and it’s the most valuable part of your job.
Common questions
Yes, people do, and it runs in a desktop app and the browser as well as the terminal. It’s a coding tool, so you still handle hosting and review the output, and that’s the hard part without coding experience. That’s the catch behind any “non technical founder Claude Code” success story: someone still has to check the work. Cursor is similar in this respect. See [Cursor vs Lovable vs Claude Code](/saas-mvp-development/lovable-vs-cursor-vs-claude-code).
No, but learning the basics helps you judge work and talk to developers. Knowing what a database and an API are will save you money.
Yes, though some prefer a technical person on the founding team. Ask the investors you’re targeting.
Building for months before anyone has offered to pay. Every route above can make that mistake.
