Bubble vs Next.js: speed now, or code you own?

The short answer

Bubble vs Next.js is a choice between speed on a platform and code you own. Bubble lets non-developers build and host a web app quickly, but the app can only run on Bubble. Next.js needs developers and costs more upfront, and you can host the code almost anywhere. Choose Bubble to learn cheaply, and Next.js for long-term control. We build in Next.js, so weigh our view accordingly.

What Bubble does better

  • Speed for non-developersYou can build real screens and logic yourself, without hiring anyone first.
  • Everything in one placeHosting, database and deployment come with the platform, so there’s less to set up.
  • Changes without a developerYou can change things yourself on the day a customer asks.
  • Web and mobile togetherBubble says web and mobile apps live in one project with shared data. A Next.js site doesn’t give you a mobile app.

What it costs over two years

Here’s a Bubble vs Next.js sum using example numbers. Say you run on Bubble’s Growth plan at $119 a month on annual billing. Over 24 months, that’s $2,856 in platform fees. Add the build: your own time, or about $2,500 to $5,500 for a hired no-code builder on a typical MVP scope, by our rough estimate.

A Next.js build of the same scope costs about $5,000 to $11,500 with a freelancer and $10,000 to $20,000 with an agency, also by our rough estimates. Our fixed price for that scope is $4,997. Then add hosting and services, which vary widely with your traffic.

So Bubble usually wins on early cost, particularly if you build it yourself. The gap narrows if you pay someone to build it, or if your usage needs a higher plan. It also doesn’t count later changes in either direction, so try your own features in the calculator.

What moving off Bubble involves

Be clear about this one before you start. Bubble’s manual says “Bubble apps can only be run on the Bubble platform”, and that if you move off, “you’ll have to rebuild the application logic.” Its FAQ mentions a raw JSON export of your application logic to help with migration, and CSV export for your data.

So migrating means rebuilding. The data can come with you, and the JSON gives a developer a record of how things work. The screens, workflows and rules get written again in code. Plan time for moving live users, including their logins and subscriptions, with as little disruption as possible.

Bubble also says that if it were ever discontinued, it would release its source code under an open-source licence so you could self-host. That’s a real protection against the company closing. It doesn’t help with price changes or outgrowing the platform.

Which one fits you

Choose Bubble if

  • You’re testing whether anyone wants this
  • You want to build and change it yourself
  • Your features are mostly standard
  • You accept that leaving means a rebuild

Choose Next.js if

  • You want code you can host and hire for anywhere
  • Search matters and you want full control of your pages
  • Your core feature is complex or unusual
  • A buyer or investor will look at your technology

When not to hire us

  • You haven’t tested demand yet. Bubble or an AI builder is a cheaper way to learn.
  • Your Bubble app works and customers are happy. Don’t rebuild it because of an opinion on the internet, including this one.
  • You want to make your own daily changes without a developer.

Common questions

  1. On 5 November 2026, Bubble’s page showed a free plan, Starter at $32 a month, Growth at $119 and Team at $349 when billed annually, with Enterprise by quote. Usage is measured in workload units, so check what your app would use.

  2. No. Bubble says there’s no traditional codebase to export. You can export your data as CSV and your application logic as JSON, which helps a rebuild but doesn’t run elsewhere.

  3. FlutterFlow, in one way, because you can download its code. It’s aimed at phone apps though, so it isn’t a direct swap. See [FlutterFlow vs Bubble](/saas-mvp-development/flutterflow-vs-bubble).

  4. No. The Next.js docs list Node.js servers, Docker, static exports and adapters for other platforms. Check which features each option supports for your app.
